Spend Money to Make Money

if you’re a yankees fan, then you’ve heard that your team “sucks” about a million times. the haters focus on one item more than all others combined – the yankees pay their players at a premium. the secondary argument is that smaller market teams can’t compete as a result. a few thoughts here. where i come from in northeast new jersey, when you’re serious about something, you communicate it by “putting your money where mouth is.” the yankees understand that everything starts with the players on the field. this is the brand. they can’t cut corners because their fans are serious about baseball. the yes network (yankees entertainment and sports), the new stadium and more deliver a fan experience that meets or exceeds expectations. most of the smaller market teams can’t compete because their fans aren’t that excited about baseball. not sure if the teams are solely to blame (not spending enough money to make money), or if their cities are sleeping on a civic responsibility to promote a national pasttime, or some combination of the two and more. what i do know is that almost everyone i’ve ever met thinks they’re underpaid. the yankees may be the only employer where that complaining ends. how does that suck?

NYY For Life

i was a young jersey boy in the late seventies when i first fell in love with the new york yankees. towards the end of dinner most nights, my grandfather would turn the game on the radio and we’d all listen well into the time when we could switch over to watching it on tv. that’s right – my mom and grandmother were also huge fans of baseball. it was a much simpler time. last night’s dramatic win in the 13th inning reminded me of just how many good times i’ve had as a fan of the team. the video here touches upon many of the yankees’ greatest moments. wow.

Talent and Class Don’t Go Unnoticed

was reading a quote today from ron gardernhire, manager of the minnesota twins major league baseball team, whose team got eliminated from postseason play yesterday by the new york yankees. it’s good to see a manager highlight talent AND class and the impact this made on him. “it’s a great baseball team. they deserve all the accolades. those guys come out firing, they bring the whole package and they have some of the classiest players in the league – guys that i really enjoy watching play. i hate it when i play against them because they kill us, but i enjoy watching derek jeter and a-rod play.” losing with grace is very important – and not just in sports. in business, there are many times when you lose in the near term but gain in the long run.
