uploaded a video for my song “key won’t unlock the door” as performed at forsythe park in savannah ga yesterday morning. 22 inches of snow in fairfax va. lush foliage deeper south. a red ribbon and wreath on every lamppost to remind you it is indeed year’s end. compare this take against the studio version and lyrics. still working on the best settings from my camcorder to imovie to vimeo (so cut a brother some slack for a minute). to explore other original compositions, please visit the official 9Davine website. look for additional videos over the coming days and weeks from points along 95 south. after a two year layoff, 9Davine returns to the stage on february 8th (my birthday). details coming soon!

Townsend to Speak at NVCC/Loudoun Campus

as first announced on august 26, i’ve been invited to guest speak at the loudoun campus of the northern virginia community college (nvcc) next tuesday, november 10 between 5 and 7pm. the loudoun campus has been recognized for excellence in technology education. my audience will be students from the communications design program under julia turner, an 11-year veteran professor at the college. my topic will be an hour-long discussion of the importance of blending art and science in a communications design career. i’ll share anecdotes and examples from my 15 years of experience, where i transitioned from fine arts student into marketing guru. the science part will be underlining the importance of various business disciplines – advertising, marketing, communications and sales. yes, there is a measurable science to most of it!

forbes magazine ranks fairfax city #3 on its “america’s top 25 towns to live well.”
“fairfax city, va is home to a strong public school system and a high median salary of $86,088. it is packed with entrepreneurs – its rate of 0.14 sole proprietors per capita ranks in the top 1% nationwide. the measures keeping fairfax out of the top spot are its entertainment and cultural offerings as well as the number of young and educated people. fairfax is a great place to raise a family and start a business, but few highly educated people ages 25-34 call it home.“ my 9davine.com and splashkit.com brands will reverse that entertainment and cultural trend!

Whole Lotta Writing Going On

been writing a ton of lyrics for my next record the last few days. want to finish the next 9davine record before the end of the year. i’ve been enjoying the mix in the types of writing i’m doing – copy for client projects, blogs, music lyrics, and more. i encourage others to keep their skills fresh and evolving. don’t get stuck handling only one type of creative effort for too long. your throughput becomes stale!

the judges on america’s got talent last night seemed to think that a tap dance to an acoustic guitar and vocal performance was extremely unique. one of the judges even said they had never seen anything quite like it. interesting. i performed same back in 2007 with a former broadway tap dancer named dustin “buster brown” conley. the difference was my song was performed in its entirety and was one i wrote (and not a cover of a known song). huge audience response then as well. did last night a missed opportunity for me? i hate that feeling every time it happens. in the very least, i’m once again reminded of my knack for innovation. glad for that, i guess!

i’ve almost completed work on a new version of www.9davine.com – to help promote my forthcoming record and concert series this fall and winter. still working on a few details. features include a song gallery with 24 songs. each selection includes mp3, lyrics, behind the scenes notes on the making of the song, and a photograph that captures a key theme. there are epk (electronic press kit) pages for 9davine and buster brown that incluide biographies, memorable gigs, animated gallery of photos, and much more. The shop showcases four records – the last three 9davine records and buster brown’s live debut record (executive produced by 9davine). lastly, the blog delivers all the latest 9davine announcements and redirects to social media pages.

9davine Makes Late Entry Into Barter World

i am in talks with greggory hammond of dc guitar lessons and guitars not guns about performing as 9davine’s bassist for the fall and winter. he is an avid barterer who will receive marketing services galore in return for his work with my musical group, 9davine. here’s a video of gregg in action:

for those out of the know, 9davine is the odd yet google-effective moniker for my musical enterprises. i’m quietly putting together big plans for the fall and winter – in anticipation of my next record. i’ve slowly been leaking early/rough tracks through this website, facebook and myspace. a refreshed website is under construction over at 9davine.com. i’m in negotiations with a business manager, video production house and backing band. 9davine is also sponsor of an area baseball team – who are reigning champions in the 25+ year old division! the team is currently 2-2-2 on the fledgling 18-game season. yep, there are ties in the league after 9 innings!

never treat me like stranger is a tiny tune at just 2:09. i wrote this last night and again used the handheld recorder to put it down before i forgot it. for those curious, i use a microtrack 24/96 from m-audio. it creates an mp3 on the fly from simply pushing record. it was a long day and this was the perfect lazy jam you ride into the wee hours of the morning. it’s inspired by a few conversations i’ve had of late – mostly about how easily people get bored with their relationships (and lives in general). the last section speaks directly to that. the rest plays off the whims people chase to keep life feeling fresh. like elevate from a few weeks ago, this song will be recorded professionally in my studio for the forthcoming record. click on for the lyrics.
